Pastor Terry’s desk: Generosity of Spirit

November 2018: Generosity of Spirit

To appreciate the true meaning developing “Generosity of Spirit” goes much further and deeper than the majority of people understand. In fact it is a biblical principle that is all embracing and not limited only to one concept. Please bear in mind that the prime purpose of this short article is an attempt the present first of all an appreciation of the source of having a “Generous Spirit”

Firstly of we need to understand that God Himself is the source of all generosity it began with Him and will finally end with Him. He prepared everything prior to Adam’s creation, He gave Adam great start in life and aware that Adam was lonely He gave him Eve as a wife and companion, and to both he gave them dominion, position and authority. When they fell into sin through disobedience He gave them garments of animal skin for clothing, from this we can see the first example of the blood covenant the shedding of blood to provide cover for the sinner. Hebrews.9:22. God gave the principle of salvation through the shedding of blood of an innocent victim at the start of man’s existence upon the earth, this continues to the present through the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ.

A. Appreciate the source of generosity.

John.3:16-17. “GOD GAVE” His one and only Son Jesus Christ to become the perfect sacrifice for sin”.

Galations.1:3-4. “LORD JESUS CHRIST GAVE Himself (to the ) for our sins, that He might delver us from this present evil age according to the will of our God and Father”

HOLY SPIRIT – Gift who is continuously giving, revelation of the Father and Son, and power to believers to become victorious overcomes.
n.b. The Holy Spirit never gives testimony of Himself, He is always revealing the nature and characteristics of the Father and the Son, yet is equally part of the Trinity. John.16:13-15

n.b. Principle, the Godhead “Gave” and continue to be givers,

B. GOD’S GENEROSITY MUST FLOW TO YOU, BEFORE IT CAN FLOW FROM YOU!

Believers need to appreciate God is their source of Generosity, from beginning to the end of salvation, the full realisation of their source generosity empowers them to flow into being a source of generosity to others. It is all about the grace of God.

C. BY GIVING OURSELVES TO GOD, OPENS THE DOORS TO HIS GENEROSITY.

Romans.12:1-2. ‘Present yourselves as a living sacrifice —-‘
2.Cor.8:1-5, v.5. ‘But first GAVE themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God”
Acts.2:42-47. “All the believers devoted (GAVE) themselves to the apostle’s teaching, teaching, and to fellowship and to sharing of meals(Incliding the Lord’s supper), and to prayer”)

C. GIVING TO THE LORD – FROM OUR RESOURCES.

Tithing. GeN.14:18-20 & Heb.7:1-4. Please note and understand that the principle of Tithing was established under grace! Only for the period under the O/T Moses to the parting of the Veil in the Temple to Christ’s death, burial and resurrection, from then the Law ceased to exist for believers in Christ.
Tithing is an act of faith, continually giving thanks to God
2.Cor.9:6-11
Romans.12:3-21, this contains along list of ministries we are given and numerous exhortations, when applied these are effectively used in the Spirit of generosity.
Continually thanks giving and praise to The Lord, for His loving kindness
In the Old Testament there are many examples of thanksgiving particularly in the Book of Psalms, and many of those written by King David contain wonderful expressions of praise and exaltation of God.

Psalm.103, is full of praise and thanksgiving through its length, particularly v.1-5. Amplified Bible

1.Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is (deepest) within me , bless His holy name.
2.Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all (not one) of His benefits.
3.Who forgives( every one) all your iniquities (wickedness), who heals all your diseases.
4.Who redeems your life from destruction (the pit), who(dignifies) and crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercies.
5.Who satisfies your mouth (your necessity and desire at you personal age) with good things, so that your youth, renewed , is like the eagle’s(strong, overcoming, soaring) Isa.20:31.

Psalm concludes with the words “BLESS THE LORD, O MY SOUL” David was a recipient of God’s Generous Spirit!

There is so much more that can be written about a “Generous Spirit” these thoughts are brief and limited to an article in which I have tried to give some idea of the priority of placing the our LORD GOD as the true source of the Spirit of Generosity, as seen in the fulness of the Godhead or Trinity
